The advocacy for Inclusive HIV Response in Nigeria got a boost on 18th April, 2024 when the Team from Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI) met with UNAIDS to chart the way forward.
In her presentation, the Executive Director of VDI Barr. Catherine Edeh highlighted the challenge of women with disabilities who are living with HIV. She reiterated that many persons with disabilities are ignorant of their HIV status and are in denial, highlighting the urgent need for targeted HIV intervention for persons with disabilities in Nigeria. She also advocated for inclusive policy and programs to address the intersectionality between HIV and disability, while expressing gratitude to AMPLIFYCHANGE for their support.
Responding, the UNAIDS Community Mobilization Advisor, Dr. Gabriel Udelikwo who received the VDI Team on behalf of the UNAIDS Country Coordinator applauded the initiative by VDI and assured the team of UNAIDS unwavering support. Barr. Fisayo Fakayode, UNAIDS Advisor on Human Rights and Laws also commended VDI for being the voice of the voiceless, stating that disability inclusion in the national HIV response is a priority for UNAIDS.
