VDI on Access to Justice for Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria

23rd February, 2024 marked a significant milestone in disability inclusion advocacy as Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI) takes its advocacy to the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation – Lateef Fagbemi, SAN in his office. The Team from VDI were received by the Head of Sexual and Gender based Violence Unit of the Ministry, Barr. Yewande Gbola-Awopetu.
Common areas of collaboration identified during the meeting include the short supply of Sign Language Interpreters and the need to bridge the gaps, Capacity Building of Legal Officers on Sign Language, joint advocacy on making public structures accessible to persons with disabilities among others. The visit highlighted the importance of collective action and partnership in combating SGBV, promoting gender equality and social justice.
The Executive Director of VDI, Barr Catherine Edeh expressed gratitude to the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation and the Head of SGBV Response Unit for the warm reception and the willingness of the Ministry to collaborate with VDI to further the agenda of disability inclusion and access to Justice for Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria.
